Interviewing Young Artists of San Francisco by a Young Artist in San Francisco

Julia Forsley, 19

Where are you from?

Hampton, New Hampshire

What do you do?

Designing. Also oil painting. Oh and thrifting is one of my favorite things to do.

How would you describe your outfit to someone who couldn't see it?

I’m wearing a traditional Chinese, boy’s, silk top with a white knit T-shirt, dark gray mom jeans, mustard colored men's socks, my super filthy converse that I’ve had forever and ever and some cool earrings.

How would you describe your style in one word?

Practical.

Who are some of your icons/artists you draw inspiration from?

I love Alexa Chung. Man repeller also, she’s so random but she makes it look so good.

What song do you have on repeat right now?

Chance the Rappers - Finish line

Was there a moment that you could pinpoint that changed who you are now?

When I was little I had this baby blanket that was in total shreds and when I was like 3 it ripped in half and I decided to make it a skirt and a crop top. My mom has a picture of it still to this day. I obviously didn’t realize like “I’m going to go into fashion”, but it totally did start there. That’s just a little moment.

What's your favorite place to hang out in San Francisco?

I really like the Mission because they have good thrift stores and good food. There’s a lot of character there.

Why did you choose to pursue art in San Francisco?

I feel like San Francisco is a great base for artists. It’s not too overwhelming, it kind of gets you started and then you can move onto bigger things from here. I also think it’s important to be surrounded by people that are doing the same thing that you love.

How long do you plan on staying in San Francisco?

2 more years max. I need to end up in New York.
